I have been working at University of Washington full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Working at a University is the great opportunity to work with smart people who are committed to working in the public sector.
IT department management is excellent, has a good grasp of strategic planning, and delivering large-scale services.

Cons

Politics have frozen state salaries for the past five years, so if you entered that long ago your pay is well below average. If you are thinking of working here plan on negotiating for as high a salary as you can get with the expectation that it will not increase.

Advice to Management

Pay and benefits really need to be sorted out, but that is out of their control.

    I have been working at University of Washington full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    access to undergraduate class (just pay the admin fees), working with great people and with cutting edge technology. you will not get bored if you work in science. you can also learn important basic skills like doing presentation/talks, project management and you can supervise others.

    Cons

    if you work in science, the pay is very low compared to corporations. not many options to stay in academia after your post doc, unless you are good and lucky enough to find a position of assistant professor (better if it is tenure track). after post doc, if you don't want to leave, they might offer to stay as tech, with the similar salary of a post doc, but you can still doing the same research you were doing as post doc. as a tech you become staff and you have much more benefit than being post doc (which does not have many of these benefit, but post doc does have matching retirement plan )

    Advice to Management

    At higher level they need to resolve the problem of how to deal with exiting post doc. obviously there are not enough faculty positions (Assistant Prof. positions) for all the post docs, and obviously the industry cannot hire so many scientist when they finish their post doc. There should be more senior positions as staff scientist available for scientist that finish the post doc

    Pros

    Great deal of resources (e.g. state of the art equipment) available to research staff. Collection of world class researchers performing high level research.

    Cons

    Bureaucratic nightmare to maneuver around. Extremely top heavy administration, with a large volume of busy work created jobs that do little more than extract indirect costs. Overly ambitious capitol expenditure plan with no real vision of how to occupy the space being built. Poor to non-existent start up packages. Systematic elimination of tenure.

    Advice to Management

    Streamline or "lean-out" executive and middle administrative management. Do more wit less philosophy should apply across the board and not directed at revenue generators (i.e. NIH and NSF funded researchers).
