I have been working at University of Washington part-time (More than a year)

Pros

Good research facilities, a lot of seminars one can find related to his field..

Cons

The noise from the stadium construction was a bit discomforting, hopefully gone now.

I have been working at University of Washington as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

If you get into a department with dynamic and caring leadership, stay there! I've worked in permanent and temporary positions. As someone who is over 50, I've observed a trend that very young and recent graduates are getting the desirable jobs and quickly promoted to professional staff jobs. It used to take many years to get promoted to professional staff. I only have anecdotes but know one instance of a manager helping an employee to tailor her resume to get the job. She revealed this at a party after a few glasses of wine.

    Cons

I agree with many of the other comments. It's hard to get recognition from management. Many managers are inexperienced and are threatened by the employees they supervise.

    Advice to Management

Delegate more to your employees. Listen and act on their suggestions. Support them. Get to know your employees. Ask for ideas and take advantage of the bonus skills your employees have that they don't get to use. Often, grad students are given plum assignments over the permanent employees. Some UW managers are very preferential and almost fawning over grad students or those who have a Master's.
