I have been working at University of Washington part-time (More than a year)

Pros

UW-IT is very well-managed and they promote a positive culture. The department encourages employee development and when graduation is near, they help make the way out easier. It was a joy to work with the department. There are several perks for students looking to work part-time, such as flexible schedules, easy commute from classes, and co-workers who are also students.

Cons

To get the most out of the available positions, you need to be a Freshman or Sophomore at the university when starting.

Advice to Management

Keep up the good work.

I have been working at University of Washington full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The UW offers lots of time off (vacation), stead work, and can be practically impossible to get fired from (union). Company does try to promote from within and they will work with your schedule. UW offers opportunities to participate in some good research studies and offers opportunities to meet some amazing individuals. You can get out what you put into the job. As far as I know, UW is one of the few employers who still offer a pension.

    Cons

Low pay and you get to work with (some individuals) who practically can't be fired (union). Can remain in the same job title for years even if you are doing the job outside of your job class. Professional and Classified Staff receive salary raises and title promotions based on the kindness of their supervisor and not on any particular metrics (regardless of performance).

    Advice to Management

Do not hesitate to let individuals go within their 6 month trial, or revise your termination policies. Promote those who are worth it or help them find better employment, it will come back to you.
