Pros

Terrific professionals in research and teaching. Best students are as capable as you will find at the most selective universities, making credit and non-credit teaching opportunities particularly rewarding. Benefits are competitive.

Cons

Facilities and technology can lag behind other universities, especially private schools. Decentralized governance with a standalone alumni association, technology transfer office and foundation decrease efficiencies for the administrators. Inefficiencies compounded by regulatory requirements applied indiscriminately to all State of Wisconsin agencies.

Advice to Management

Excellent focus on the liberal arts in the current administration. UW's strength in medical science, engineering and other fields could obscure the value of -- and allocation of $$$ to -- key disciplines with strong scholarship in the humanities tradition.

See Cons. Salary is a major issue at the university -- it makes good people
think about leaving from time to time simply because of lack of compensation.
