Pros

Definitely the people! Smart folks who remain humble and down to earth. Lots of challenges which means lots of opportunities to grow for the sort of person who is willing to face them head on.

Cons

It often feels like we still want to be a small startup culturally but after a few years of success we've grown to the size where this is always possible.

Advice to Management

Keep up the transparency and continue giving employees opportunities to grow and expand their responsibilities.

I have been working at Upstart full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    1. people - everyone is intelligent yet humble at the same time. Engineering, product, and data science teams have good sense of camaraderie
    2. business - growing rapidly! Path to IPO is much more apparent than in most startups as executive team puts an emphasis on growing the business economically/sensibly over wasteful endeavors
    3. mission - ultimately aiming to create a fairer system with respect to who can access credit and at what price.

    Cons

sometimes need to take a step back and ensure the foundations are in place to support it in say recruiting, managers, systems, etc

I worked at Upstart as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Free snacks, coffee (you’ll definitely need a lot of it) , and catered lunch on Wednesday (not the best catering company unless you like unflavored food)

    Cons

If you get stuck with a terrible manager, you can kiss your growth goodbye. They sell you this dream of being able to grow within the company, but they’ll hire someone someone external more often then not and you’ll get stuck. You’re underpaid, especially for the area you’re living in. (Fast food chains almost pay as much as here, seriously) Shifts are 6am-2:30PM or 1130am to 8pm. You have a set amount of applications to do, but you have management playing with what hours you should work based on a unrealistic expectation. Productivity is productivity. You do your productivity but it’s never enough. There isn’t a career path here. This is more of a turn and burn type of start up where they don’t even convert you. You can hit all of their metrics, but find a reason to keep you as a contractor. Don’t waste your time, they won’t treat you with respect here. Find something that’s worthwhile.

    Advice to Management

Relying on contractors isn’t a sustainable business model to grow. Offer people careers, not an underpaying job that barely gets people by. The turnover rate is a reflection of the business you run.
