I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It's an exciting place to be and I love working with 'A players' in the industry. People are smart and motivated, which has meant that we are able to retain great talent. I have been at the company for 5 years and VMware has consistently grown and been profitable - even through a very rough economic climate. I attribute that success and vision to the executive leadership.

    Cons

VMware will suck the life out of you if you let it. Work / life balance is a constant struggle. The pay is not as competitive as other companies. Working in 5th gear all of the time gets exhausting.

    Advice to Management

Find more ways to retain good employees and re-evaluate compensation structure for employees that have been with the company 3+ years. Provide more managerial training for managers because a lot of them do not have the skills to bring out the best in their teams and retain talent.

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great products, solid foundation to build upon, lots of opportunity for changing jobs

    Cons

Constant changes of direction from upper management. Can't decide between having a vision and regressing into business as usual. Anything vaguely resembling vision vanishes quickly as it trickles down the management stack.

    Advice to Management

Buy into your own visions. Give development a chance to work on crazy ideas again. Allow newly acquired companies/people to mingle with the culture-rich parts of the company. Knock down the silos, and look at how acquired tech can fit into more than just one area, instead of forcing people to keep reinventing the wheel you just bought
