I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

still some smart people, great products and a phenomenal strategy. There's still cowboys who are getting stuff done, you just have to look hard to find them.

Cons

way too many overlapping projects and products, no one willing to make the hard decision to stamp out the overlaps. The consensus driven culture lives on but with so many people and decisions to be made, it can be paralyzing.

Advice to Management

Make some hard choices but be transparent about why you're making them.

I worked at VMware as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Intelligent people - staff engineers are pretty awesome, good compensation (for interns), good pantry.

    Cons

The nature of work varies from team to team - could be really interesting, could be really boring, no interaction with mentor/manager (personal experience - YMMV), no emphesis on KT. The company is growing at exponential rate and losing small company nature at the same rate. So your experience really vary from team to team.

    Advice to Management

I guess I wasn't there long enough to give any advice but if you compare the company to Google/Facebook/Apple and expect to attract talent, you should match the compensation and benefits. Specially when you spoil the interns by paying them so much.

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They take very good care of their people. They are building something remarkable and innovative. I love working with the people at VMware. Everyone is trying to do the right thing.

    Cons

Processes for carrying out cross-functional projects aren't mature due to fast growth. Sometimes is much more difficult to get things completed than one would expect. Telecommute policy isn't very lenient.
