I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

This is a company that offers great benefits to their employees as well as very nice treats such as catered lunch once per week, food and beverages every day.

Cons

The case load is always increasing as VMware expands their portfolio by acquiring other companies. The support personnel is not increased at the same rate.

Advice to Management

Proactively hire TSEs to reduce case load of support engineers

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent products and a great following from users. Salary and benefits are exceptional here, as well as the nice perks if you work in a branch office with a stronger sense of camaraderie.

Good opportunities for those coming from outside and great products. Typically has high growth and shares success w/employees. FSA w/ $250 match, 401k match up to $6k, charitable match up to $3k, free snacks at branch offices, fun get togethers in UT, Palo Alto and Austin offices.

    Cons

VMware is a large, impersonal company that has much to offer, but needs strength of leadership and management to establish a better culture remotely and give more potential to build a career path for employees. There is little development of employees even though they have tried to recognize the need over the past year in small, ineffective ways. It is a cultural shift that will have to take place to make real change.

Remote employees are usually very isolated. Unfortunately, the layoff of 900 individuals on 1/31/2013 was an enormous shock for those outside of corporate. Instead of transitioning employees or offering other roles first before laying people off, those let go were told that VMware would be reshaping roles and would have 1000 new jobs announced in early 2013 that these employees should apply for. It seems that if this had been less of a knee-jerk reaction and more of a well-thought out shift, they could've prevented job loss, kept higher morale and current employees would not be drowning with work due to less headcount and absorbing the jobs of others. Work/life balance is suffering now for remaining employees as a result.

    Advice to Management

Create a sales force that is less smug with high-morale, increase channel focus, build a strong corporate culture for advancement, charity through the VMware Foundation where local teams come together and develop employees for leadership opportunities/advancement. Give outstanding employees a chance at promotion and give recognition where deserved.

I worked at VMware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

great product customers love it and I loved selling it and that made for an enjoyable experience

    Cons

Middle managment has no relevant experience or necessary qualification. I was managed by a guy who was completly incompetent. Issues raised with him, he would not raise with senior managers. Only directors know whats going on there and even they have their own agendas.
The company is more focused on their competitors and less on selling the products

    Advice to Management

Sell the product and dont worry about the comptition. Reward good sales people. Don't hire out of desperation in certain divisions where staff with certain languages are hard to find.. cause then you are only hiring a language and not a skilled individual who's interest it is to perform. So many people are working at the company that shouldn't be there at all.
Get better managers / middle managment and start selling stop worrying about the competition.
