I have been working at ValueOptions full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Flexible schedule and good benefits. Vacation time is pretty generous. Broad project types to expand skill set. People for the most part are supportive and knowledgeable. Oh and I do like the casual dress code!

Cons

Many conference calls, leaving little time to actually be able to tackle projects and produce and surpass the targeted goals. I would like to see the company bring back 401K match.

I worked at ValueOptions full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There are superior managed care companies, however if you are new to the field it is a good place to start as they just manage behavioral care, it is large enough company to be able to withstand losing contracts and providing security

    Cons

If you want to work for a large managed health care company, there are drawbacks to this company. There is little interest in keeping talented people after contracts are over.

    Advice to Management

Don't underestimate people, losing employees because of a contract loss is unavoidable but more interest in retaining would pay off in the end.

    Pros

MARYLAND OFFICE ONLY! I loved getting to work with the providers, the consumers, and the state. Their mission, vision, and values are wonderful. Their programs were beneficial to the providers for the most part. The doctors there were wonderful and understanding. The Care Managers are compassionate and knowledgable. They have a good PEEPS committee which tries to help the morale.

    Cons

MARYLAND OFFICE ONLY! This place is like a high school drama. There are several people within the company who do not pull their weight. If you like teamwork, this is not the place for you. There are several people in different departments who are extremely overworked. The Care Managers have an insane caseload and there isn't enough coverage. Contract requirements haven't been met, but the people responsible aren't held accountable. If you like to get thrown under the bus, the Maryland office is for you! There is a lot of dishonesty and cliques within the company. My personal experience with this company was horrible. There are certain people who do not foster a nice working environment. It was my impression that there was a hostile working environment for some, which is unacceptable in a mental health company, and it doesn't match their mission, vision OR Values! The new management doesn't seem to be working well. Unqualified people are promoted while others are held back. I watched a coworker get railroaded after she worked so hard to please everyone and was then fired. Since then, people are worried abou their jobs.

    Advice to Management

Replace certain upper management with someone who is more goal oriented to help the company and knows what is really going on in the state of MD. This person should also not be trashing the Senior VP to those under her.
