Current Employee - Paraprofessional in Vancouver, WA

Pros

Better pay and benefits than other area districts.
Big district with ample transfer options.
Strong union that really does work for individual employee needs.
Most schools are fairly new and are clean working environments.

Cons

Micromanagement by district administrators is too much sometimes. Its as if they don't think teachers and paraprofessionals are smart enough to teach little kids.

Advice to Management

Trust in the intelligence of your instructional staff. Their creativity can produce better results than the latest shiny, new curriculum that you were duped into buying.

    Pros

Training opportunities and reimbursement for these trainings is an excellent opportunity for keeping current with up to date methodology. Staff are supportive of one another.

    Cons

Classes too crowded and/or too many demands for full time teachers. Too many demands for record keeping that take us away from students.

    Advice to Management

More support needs to be given to teachers who suffer from burnout

I worked at Vancouver Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Students and their families made this job excellent. Assigned mentors make this job realistic. Mentors do not make formal observations or reports. Their sole job is to support and offer advice to teachers new to the district.

    Cons

VPSD needs a way to connect new administrators with veteran admin to learn and be accountable for making smart, confident decisions so good teachers will find reasons to stay. Supporting teachers can happen with the right guidance.

    Advice to Management

Find ways to connect new administrators with veteran administrators who have a track record of safely dealing with liability and keeping good teachers.
