I worked at Varsity Tutors part-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

One-on-one sessions, flexible schedule, good hourly pay, most of the students are wonderful and enthusiastic, management is easy to reach and usually very helpful, interview was informal an enjoyable

Cons

Hard to move up, not a lot of hours per week, paid once monthly, categorized as an independent contractor for tax purposes so you owe all of your taxes at the end of the year, some students are far from your house, but you can get distance pay

Advice to Management

Don't categorize tutors as independent contractors. It's a cheap way for the company to keep costs down, but it can be unnecessarily problematic for tutors at the end of the year.

    Pros

Nothing good really, I only worked for them for a week

    Cons

They charge students $80 an hour while paying me only $20? Plus I still have to handle my own taxes and enjoys no benefit! I suggest peal to look else where

I worked at Varsity Tutors full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    working from home eliminates commute

    Cons

I worked for varsity for less than a year. They pay their associate directors 35K a year and for this they want 50+ hours a week. The job is a scam, you "interview" tutoring candidates and then "hire" them, except your are not offering them a real job. In essence, if they are even remotely qualified, you snap them up and offer them "possible hours" in exchange for a contract that locks them into a non-compete, essentially prohibiting them for working for any other tutoring company and taking them out of the market. In return they may get some tutoring hours, they may not. The company is VERY careful not to use any language that promises tutoring hours to tutors. They indoctrinate their recruiters and tell them EXACTLY what to say during these supposed interviews, down to the letter. The management is a joke, they are a bunch of 20+ somethings who pretend to be big shots and are clueless on how to run a company. I didn't last long before I couldn't in good conscience participate in this scam any more. My guess is that it's only a matter of time before qualified tutors nationwide wake up to this scam and avoid this company like the plague. That, or they may get sued first, who knows. If you look at their careerbuider profile, they flood supposed "job openings" with hundreds of ads nationwide. Don't be fooled, they are not growing that quickly and their client base is not at all what they make it out to be.

    Advice to Management

Please try to stop scamming by phishing the tutoring field, it's unethical and morally wrong
