I have been working at Verizon full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Good benefits and competetive or better salary especially the more years you have ... In IT for 25 years, there is room for advancing through different jobs such as programmer, project manager, release manager or program management but becoming a manager with reporting people is much harder - good work life balance most of the time unless you are a tester or developer

Cons

Lots of reorganizations i& budget cuts in IT lead to RIF's of good hard working people, contractors go first - atleast 2 RIF's per year... must be on important programs where funding and focus is placed...outsourcing is an issue.

Advice to Management

Overall good experience with management, more transparency is needed though

I worked at Verizon full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits were the best thing.

    Cons

Having to be in a Union; only allowed the rear end kissers to advance in the company; lied to all the employees about the Call Center closing when they knew it was, etc.

    Advice to Management

Allow the good employees to do their job and get rid of the bad.

I have been working at Verizon as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Great opportunity to get high level enterprise experience.

    Cons

They don't' care about you as a person, and they make you aware of that. There is plenty of opportunity for promotion but if you end up in a low level job, you will likely be stuck there as there is a constant drive to reduce RIFs. Additionally, there are constant RIFs. Frequently, you will find the position you are aspiring to dissolved into your job without raise in title or pay.

    Advice to Management

Metrics are wonderful tools but using them as a threatening tool instead of a motivating factor is absurd. Threats do not supplement actual investment in employee morale.
