Pros

If you do not like Engineering, you may find a meaningful job. Positions best suited for this company are accountants, political climbers.

Cons

If the whole concept of engineering, efficiency, project design and management, task completion and ethics are important to you, then you're not a good fit. The top management has successfully encouraged so many employees to leave that they are now in the process of mass hiring.

Advice to Management

Hire some engineers at the top who have the knowledge, ethics and stamina to remove the astounding political control. VDOT has been reduced to the equivalent of the man behind the curtain.

I have been working at Virginia Department of Transportation full-time

    Pros

VDOT will always offer a stable job to whoever is looking for it. If you need a job that will always pay you and provide satisfactory benefits, VDOT is the place to be. Your workload will also be manageable enough that you won't have to take anything home with you, even if you work in one of the busier sections.

    Cons

The career ladder doesn't really exist at VDOT. Usually people apply to different jobs in different sections in order to move up or at least get a raise. Some people have moved horizontally to different hourly positions in the hopes of getting more experience, and that sometimes takes years. One woman who working full time died suddenly and there was a mad scramble among people here to snatch up her position. This isn't the place for young people seeking to actively move up in the ranks.

Starting out here can also be pretty difficult. Depending on the section you apply to and who runs, training can be minimal to nonexistent. You won't punished for not knowing everything immediately, but expect to spend at least a few months figuring out what's happening around you, especially if you're unfamiliar with civil engineering.

    Advice to Management

Management is spread so far and wide this will probably fall on deaf ears, but my biggest recommendation would be to create a training program aimed at hiring more young people. Almost everybody at VDOT has a great wealth of knowledge, but don't know how to share it before they inevitably retire and take said knowledge with them.
