Pros

Col. Flaherty has made a good effort to diversify management. In the old days, it was all old white guys.

Cons

You have to have a certain type of personality to work there. Ex-military, ex-police and (for some reason) Christians seem happiest there. Senior management's response to complaints/problems is generally "suck it up". Civilians ("unsworn") always come in second.

Advice to Management

Good or not, once you reach major or above, you're there for as long as you want, competent or not. Not a good system.

In northern VA, you have to work overtime because of the cost of living.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Virginia State Police (Less than a year)

    Pros

Exciting, rewarding work. Provided opportunity to experience things and meet people that I would not have had otherwise.

    Cons

Typically required to relocate when hired and often if you desire to advance. A lot of travel involved. Responsibilities of position required so much time that it literally became my life.

    Advice to Management

More personnel needed. Funds should be dispersed according to actual practical needs. Need to quit spreading the agency so thin, eliminate ineffective programs and concentrate efforts on on ones that are of use.
