Pros

Col. Flaherty has made a good effort to diversify management. In the old days, it was all old white guys.

Cons

You have to have a certain type of personality to work there. Ex-military, ex-police and (for some reason) Christians seem happiest there. Senior management's response to complaints/problems is generally "suck it up". Civilians ("unsworn") always come in second.

Advice to Management

Good or not, once you reach major or above, you're there for as long as you want, competent or not. Not a good system.

    Pros

Independence, take home car, excellent training.

    Cons

In northern VA, you have to work overtime because of the cost of living.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Virginia State Police full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Take home vehicle is a plus.

    Cons

Very poor management. Wasted spending. Too much internal drama. Way too many decisions made in a vacuum. Agency continues to suffer from poor morale and high turn over.

    Advice to Management

Need higher educated business administrators. Empower the employees at entry level to grow and be more effective as future leaders. Rid yourself of ineffective programs and concentrate on ones that are effective. Stop plugging a hole with a body. Put experienced skill level people in management positions that have the education, certification and work experience to supervise employees in their respective fields.
