I have been working at Virginia Tech part-time (Less than a year)

Pros

A lot of independence while doing research. It is really good, because I am free to pursue what I think is interesting.

Cons

Too much leniency makes it harder to set and meet deadlines. Often it is hard to get anything done.

    Pros

    - great focus on science, usually PIs are very passionate about their work

    Cons

    - the school in general does not focus on science heavily, therefore funding is always up in the air unless your PI is a big name

I have been working at Virginia Tech as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

My experience as a graduate research assistant for one of the university's engineering departments has been excellent. Also, the area is fantastic--a couple years ago, Business week ranked Blacksburg as the best town in which to raise a family. The culture is great, there are coffee shops everywhere, live music at most places, and the natural surroundings are beautiful.

    Cons

The university, as with most publicly funded organizations, often allocates funds inefficiently. Also, Blacksburg does get quite cold and often wet in late winter.
