I have been working at Virginia Western Community College part-time

    Pros

I have loved working at this school. There is a lot of support from the college and many co workers. I have found it to be a great role and really enjoy working with the other staff.

    Cons

There is not a lot of room for growth and moving up.

    Advice to Management

To allow for more growth opportunities and for part time positions to move to full time.

I worked at Virginia Western Community College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice facilities (clean, modern classrooms and labs).

    Cons

Full-time (i.e. "real") faculty would direct adjunct faculty (like myself) to teach courses with the same rigor as would be experienced in similar courses taught in a 4-year institution. In my own case, I was assigned to sections of a course populated mainly by students that had failed my course at least once and in some cases, twice. The students complained to the administration when they were unable to pass my materials (again), and my supervisor turned on me and made everything my fault.

This school wants to present the appearance of a legitimate academic institution, but in reality it simply wants to push students through, so long as the college is paid, with little concern for how much they actually learn. I found that VWCC is unwilling to even consider the possibility that failing students' grievances against instructors might be exaggerated or wrong.

    Advice to Management

Stop using adjunct instructors like a one-time, disposable commodity.
