I worked at Visa Inc. full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

The company provides excellent pay and benefits as well as good facilities. The HQ location is an easy commute for bay area residents. Visa is a very strong brand and looks great on a resume.

Cons

Executive management and leadership has been an issue here for years. There is so much energy put into internal politics that the business focus suffers. Now that the company is public, this should be less of an issue. Internal processes can be bureaucratic and frustrating - it takes a long time to get things done.

Advice to Management

Get clear with a vision, empower leadership and hold teams accountable. No more regional politics.

I worked at Visa Inc. as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

The professionalism, procedures and structure of Visa is unsurpassed. This is the most intelligent and focused group I've ever worked with. I enjoyed the 'formal' atmosphere and the dedication to meeting deadlines.

    Cons

This is a double-edged sword - While the projects have assertive delivery dates; there is also not much room or time to make personal connections. This is truly WORK and not play. One has to understand and be comfortable with the formality and executive feel of this company to be happy working here. If you're looking for a layed-back environment; this is not the company to work for.

    Advice to Management

There is some redundancy to the procedures (marketing campaign department) - does everything need to be triple checked? If so, this seems like a waste of money and resources. Review procedures with employees and be clear on expectations.

I worked at Visa Inc. full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay, great benefits, access to current technologies.

    Cons

Teamwork is challenged, as others have said, SLOW decision making, internal competition can be stifling or scary. Be prepared to work 12 hours/day or whatever it takes to meet deadlines. Exhausting. You may not have a cube or office, but just open seating, however they may also allow you to work from home nearby on VPN as long as you can show up for meetings. Security paranoia is understandable and also one of the reasons it is so difficult to get things done. Data integration is tricky with systems all isolated by firewalls. And projects all locked down and secured. "Skip Level meeting", (unless you scheduled it) means you are getting canned.

    Advice to Management

Hold managers accountable for the core values, including diversity. Need more longer term stability in internal department organization. Every time you reorganize and jerk people around, employees waste time moving and re-securing their project data as well as their cube spaces (if they have a cube or office). System administrators cant keep up with demand for authorizing and de-authorize access, and migration of team folders and data. Big waste of time.
