Positive Outlook

I have been working at Volunteers of America full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Extremely motivated to move forward with quality service and true to their mission statement to uplift all lives. It is a focused organization that recognizes quality, and encourages growth of their employees. I have been extremely impressed with the new leadership team the last 2-3 years! They want to grow, to receive feedback to be approachable and they speak with actions not just words.

Cons

Not many: Human service is not high paying, this organization is fair and ballpark.

Advice to Management

Keep the passion, the focus on growth, quality and leading the industry.

I worked at Volunteers of America full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Ability to work with minimal supervision. When time permits, you get to help low income families.

    Cons

The problems arise from management. No one seems to be on the same page when it comes to due dates, meetings, and trainings. Managers will schedule these without considering the appointments you have already made or events that other managers may have scheduled you for. Their mis-communication and un-professionalism trickles down and is seen by the client or parent. Because of the lack of training, many managers do not know what they are doing.
The managers also don't account for their mistakes and will blame it on the employee. Trainings have been held to help you work better and get along better with managers but the real trainings should be given to the managers.
Many employees take on this job to help families with needs from low income communities however, the due dates, meetings, and trainings will prevent you from really helping these families.
The Head Starts associated with this agency are in very poor conditions. The classrooms are filled with loud colors which do not help calm the already rowdy children from these low income communities. The space is up to standard but the office space has been reduced in order to fill the space with more children hence more money for the agency. The schools have morning and afternoon sessions which drain the teachers and does not give them enough time to do their paper work. Fridays are the only days available to them for classroom planning and doing paperwork but most of the time, the managers will schedule trainings which makes the teachers fall back on paperwork and due dates.
The locations of some of the Head Starts are in very unsafe neighborhoods. Employees have had their cars broken into and parts stolen. One site is in a prostitution ridden neighborhood and no security is offered when employees are alone.
So far, the agency has had a very high turn out. Many employees have left and those that stay dont seem to have the education or ambition to want better.

    Advice to Management

Get it together before you lose all your employees.
