I have been working at Von Maur

    Pros

Work with schedule, easy to get hired, not an extremely hectic place, get a decent amount of tardies, absences, etc. management is fairly nice. Contests, gratis is not great from venders but Von maur does what they can to give gratis.

    Cons

You don’t get training, people call out leaving you to be over worked, continuously asked to cover other departments even departments that you have never worked in, if you act like you don’t want to cover then you are told you are not a “team player” department managers can be very two faced. There is sort of a chance to move up if you want. But some people they will promote very quickly and others they tell you... that you have to make certain sales numbers and if you can make that number then they say they know you can do well as a department manager which doesn’t make sense necisariky because even the higher up managers have said they are not good sales people so I think they just tell you that to make you sell more. I think upper management does have good intensions they just aren’t necessarily the most qualified. All in all this place is ok but this is the biggest piece of advice I will tell you. LIE AND SAY THAT YOH WERE MAKING MORE MONEY THAN WHAT YOU ARE AT YOUR PREVIOUS JOB. Do not take what they offer you basically come up with any reason why you should be paid more bc once they get you in the raises suck. Make sure you get paid more when you come into Von maur. All in all decent place to work but you will not get cosmetics experience you want. Just use this place as a way to get in to the industry.

    Advice to Management

Pay more. You will have happier employees. Continue to work with peoples schedules I love that. Very good at listening to both sides. Stop overworking cosmetics and asking them to cover departments like shoes, it makes no sense and causes the employees to look and feel stupid because they don’t know what’s going on. Stop with the “team player” crap also about covering. You wouldn’t want to not get paid for doing... extra so don’t expect them to. Some of your managers are not qualified, when you aren’t there they don’t answer pages, they don’t know any answers to anything, look to your employees who have been there a long time and promote them. Just bc they don’t have the “Von maur look” doesn’t mean they won’t make great management, give them a chance.

I have been working at Von Maur part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Von Maur is sincerely the best place I’ve worked. Management cares and works with you and you are made to sincerely feel like a valuable asset to the company.

    Cons

Women cannot wear pants, must wear skirts or dresses and it’s very impractical for the midwestern cold, not the mention dated.
