I have been working at Waddell & Reed full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Depending on the managing principal and your own personal level of production, you have flexibility to manage your business the way you want. The company provides resources to help advisors provide service to their clients. I think the information available from the fund managers, conference calls, and company meetings help you bring value to your clients.

    Cons

Not for those who want complete independence like an LPL company. Their compliance department is frustrating because policies will changes based off of whose eyes are looking at it. Can make business submissions a frustrating process. At times you'll wonder if they even want you to process business. Frequent form updates that are more aesthetic than practical.

    Advice to Management

Have compliance come up with some efficient and advisor friendly policies and forms and stick with them.

I worked at Waddell & Reed as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Good training, conservative values, with room for advancement. There are no boundaries as far as territory goes that would otherwise limit where you can do business. There are some exclusive products you can offer and home office generally looks over your shoulder to be a help.

    Cons

Commissions and compensation in general is lower than the competitions'. Marketing efforts of the companies' products are heavily dependent on individual marketing efforts, so you don't have a household name so to speak as far as your products go.

    Advice to Management

With a small company like this, you don't have to have so many chiefs and so little Indians. If you have production issues and concerns about advisors' activities, going through 'management' to get feedback on the situation only gives you the watered down version. With a minimally extra time investment you can get directly with the advisors. Get out of your ivory towers and mingle more.
