Pros

Great senior leadership and awesome pay. This company is really trying to transform the trash and recycling business. It would be nice to completely remove the days of drivers having to get out of truck (too many injuries & accidents). I also like the Life Critical Rules...break one of these and you are history. All of the life critical rules are a result of multiple employee and customer deaths over the years.

Cons

A little frustrating to see your employees come into work and leave 4 hours later, with full 8 hours pay or an option to start working OT (union contracts). Meanwhile, management is scheduled for a min. 10 hour day (when things are going well).

Advice to Management

Great company overall but work-life balance for management is non-existent. The bonus structure is purely team based...it would be nice to have a small percentage directly tied to manager's individual performance and that of his/her team.

I have been working at Waste Management full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Weekly paycheck and monthly incentive

    Cons

Weak leadership that micromanages their employees, yet has no idea what it's like to work on the front line. It's all about the almighty dollar and cutting costs. Neither the local MA nor corporate really cares about their employees, even those who have worked long term and been loyal and "engaged" with the company for years. Policies, procedures, and department infrastructure always changing without notice, not much promoting from within due to politics, HR does not know what they are doing, complete disorganization, and employee disrespect. This year sick days were eliminated so any unscheduled time off is reprimanded- this is not conducive to working parents and very un progressive for a Fortune 200 company. Customer service and Operations do not have the same visions and contradict each other, customers have to call in many times for complaint resolution. The list of cons could go on and on.... It is a job not a career working here.

    Advice to Management

Start investing more in your long term employees and put a more progressive attendance/PTO structure in place. Provide leadership with employee relations skills training and monitor field leadership, to increase focus on reducing micromanagement and increasing employee morale and reduction of employee attrition. Require leadership to have full knowledge of those positions that they oversee and have them take an active role in assisting in those positions to improve metrics and meet department goals. Ensure that each department is adequately staffed to ensure the workload is attainable, instead of cutting employees and expecting the remaining to take on the extra tasks. Also recommend that the pay scale be more streamlined and fair across the board.
