Pros

They hire anyone. Easy to get experience right out of school. Most places won't hire you without experience.
You will get a lot of experience.

Cons

Management treats the front line caregivers very poorly. You are overworked, under appreciated and constantly being scrutinized and questioned for any decisions you make. Management rates you extra low on all of your annual reviews. One manager comes right out and states that she feels everyone "does not meet expected standards" in at least one or more areas of requirements. One year peer evaluations rated one of my skills as "Highly Exceptional", but the manager rated that skill as "does not meet minimal requirements". So, the people that see my work every day completely disagree with the manager that sits in her office all day. But, I have to live with the bad score on my evaluation.
Another down side, is that you have no system of checks on management. They are able to change any of the rules whenever they want. You have no system in place to file a grievance. I have seen employees, that voice a different opinion than management, get fired lickity split. It is very easy for management to make accusations, without providing concrete proof, at this company.

Advice to Management

Your employees are unhappy. Many of them have left the offending departments, or completely left the hospital. The quality of care has dropped greatly, in the past 2 years, because many experienced nurses have left and are being replaced with inexperienced staff. You need to stop having "Ice Cream Socials" and "Birthday Parties" for the employees and start doing something about the working conditions and get some managers that create an atmosphere where employees are no longer fearful for their jobs. You need to spend an extensive amount of time in your departments, and not notify the department managers of your arrival, to see how things are actually working.

I worked at Watertown Regional Medical Center part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Small-town feel. Teamwork between physicians and nurses. Decent pay.

    Cons

The buyout. WRMC said, "We're not being bought out," but they got $100 million and gave up majority control of the organization to another entity. Sounds like a buyout to me. They've lost their focus on individuals in favor of the pandering mumbo jumbo about "a hospital of one" with total focus on patient satisfaction. They throw employees under the bus if patient complaints arise and value cheap labor (new grads) over good experienced nurses. They keep BAD old nurses who need to be put out to pasture because they know how to suck up to management.

    Advice to Management

Get your heads out of the sand. Find something you can be good at and focus on that. 24/7 interventional cath lab might be a place to start. Start a rehab unit that can keep some of the revenue the hospital loses to Marquardt and GLC. This could prevent bounce-back patients and decrease hospital liability for poor sub-par post-hospital rehab.

I worked at Watertown Regional Medical Center full-time

    Pros

Great coworkers who really care about the work they are doing and for each other. Good food in the restaurant.

    Cons

No warm and fuzzy. Part of a huge health system down south, Lifepoint Health. They own 70+ hospitals with over 40,000 total employees. You are just a number as an employee. Very poor decision by Watertown to turn over a well run community hospital that was NOT in trouble to such a unfriendly group like this.

    Advice to Management

Care about the people that are doing all the work for you. Just care.......... it will go a long way.
