I have been working at Wayfair full-time (More than a year)

Pros

- Good, fun and interesting work
- Great people, everyone is very helpful and friendly
- Fun, young culture which is great for people out of school
- Good, competitive benefits (free snacks, good medical/dental/401k, etc.)

Cons

- Way below average pay, some people get huge raises and others don't without any real reasoning
- Sometimes workload can be large, depending on time of year and team

Advice to Management

Pay your engineers more, or your turnover in engineering is going to become worse than it already is. We hear a lot about how much we're growing year over year, but we don't see it reflected in our salaries. Your employees will start to feel very unappreciated.

    Pros

    - High achievers can get more responsibility and opportunities earlier in their career than they would at other companies
    - Work hard, play hard culture
    - Decent benefits package

    Cons

    - LOW PAY
    - Poorly trained, inexperienced managers
    - Little to no career path for employees
    - No designated sick days and only 5 federal holidays per year
    - 'Crony-ism' through all levels of management

    Advice to Management

    Invest in employees and treat them with respect - not as disposable assets to get for the lowest price. Employees who are happy and want to work for you will be much more productive and willing to invest back in the company. Bringing in more experienced managers from outside the company can go a long way, since the quality of experience that employees have at Wayfair seems to depend on the manager as well as the department. Employees are encouraged to share their ideas and present new arguments in theory, but many managers (disproportionately those who have worked mostly at Wayfair and at all levels) see this in practice as being "un-collaborative" or "not a team player". If the culture that you're trying to build is a meritocracy and organic growth and change, these kinds of perceptions seem extremely detrimental. Compensation should also be more in line with what other companies are offering if you want to attract and keep talent - free snacks and the occasional party do not pay the rent or help employees invest in their financial security and education.

    I worked at Wayfair as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -Outstanding/extensive benefits package (3.2 weeks PTO, health/dental/vision, sox/bruins/celtics tickets, discount movie tickets, free snacks, yearly bonus...)
    -Great work/life balance
    -Transparent work environment. Directors, VPs and Co-Founders are easy to talk to and provide insight and guidance.
    -Casual dress code. Jeans/t-shirts and shorts in the summer.
    -Great office space (right near the Pru) and easy to get to from MBTA.
    -Getting to work with some of the brightest minds in Boston.
    -Fun culture that promotes creativity and growth.

    Cons

    -Salaries can be a little low on the business side but that's something senior management is aware of and working to fix.

    Advice to Management

    Continue to hire top talent and keep your employees happy. The market in Boston is extremely competitive (especially in software) and the last thing you want is to lose talent to competing companies.
