I worked at Williams-Sonoma full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Fun and exciting a lot of the time, some really great people to work with, exciting environment for those who can handle the stress and pace, opportunities to run with various projects and own them, beautiful stores, great discount.

Cons

Even for retail a seriously high-pressured and morale-busting environment. Too politicized, too polarizing, too negatively competitive.Competition CAN be constructive and positive if handled correctly but this company just doesn't know how to do that. Direction is often chaotic, or simple non-existent, focus often misses the mark on what is most important, ignorance of real-life at the store level, too many levers to meet, too little positive input and appreciation for what is being expected from management, too little (or non-existent) training, complete obliviousness to the low morale and the causes of it, antiquated hardware at the store level, too much emphasis on the superficial and not enough on substance.

Advice to Management

Listen to your employees at all levels, train, mentor, and develop the talent you have, promote appropriately - dial down on the favoritism and up on career advancement for the talent you should be growing. Change your priorities for your staffs - make your expectations for them realistic. Give opportunities to shine and flourish instead of failure and frustration. Upgrade your technology. Middle managers must advocate for their staffs!
