I worked at Williams-Sonoma full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Great product you can stand behind
Great teams in the stores
Great discount

Cons

Little to no training to sell high end products
Unrealistic workload
No longer the People First company they claim to be
Disconnect between reality in the stores and what upper management thinks/dreams
Out with the old in with the new

Advice to Management

So much unhappiness and discontent in the stores. Invest some $$ in your people and payroll. Do some undercover visits to see the reality in your stores (ala Undercover Boss) Or work in a store on a normal day and see what it is like

I worked at Williams-Sonoma as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

amazing suite of businesses ( william - sonoma, potter barn , pb kids , elm street)
    nice store to work in

    Cons

from an employee perspective it feels like a large disjointed company
scheduling for employees is a nightmare ( on call , hours cut, etc)

    Advice to Management

Come on management use sales forecasts to staff. Employees can not have a life if you expect them to work on an on-call schedule, cut their hours and have unrealistic expectations of them ..

I have been working at Williams-Sonoma full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

40% employee discount; great product to sell; lovely stores; celebrity book-signings; you can always quit at a moments' notice per your employment contract

    Cons

Zero training; your talents for sales and merchandising will be wasted here: manager only cares about number of sales through register; bullying management style; bottom line is all that matters; 'Customer Service' just buzzwords, more like a bad joke; seasonal part-time staff treated like fodder; kitchen is FILTHY - will never touch ANY sample offered in-store every again. Before you even consider applying here, hang around the store and watch how management treat/talk to staff.

    Advice to Management

Allow staff to review manager anonymously - you'll be surprised at what you learn. Tell Managers not to throw their staff under the bus. Talented people are leaving company because little room for advancement and even less encouragement. I am doing just that, moving to a company that values my contributions, should have done this sooner!
