I worked at Willis Towers Watson as a contractor (More than 3 years)

Pros

- tons of opportunities for personal & professional development
- smart people
- interesting work
- autonomy
- flexibility (work from home very accepted)

Cons

- inconsistent leadership across business units; some leaders don't communicate, others do
- risk aversion to telling people realities of change post-merger lead to many frustrated & disengaged associates

Advice to Management

Be open - give your very smart people the benefit of the doubt - deliver tough messages without sugar coating, those who don't accept it don't belong there in the long run.

I worked at Willis Towers Watson full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A lot of great people that have worked with and for. Also, was able to learn a lot from talented individuals that have since moved on.

Benefits start day one...5% discount on company stock.

Big corporation with vast resources...unfortunately none have to do with IT software development.

    Cons

Poor pay. Mediocre benefits. Almost 0 raises regardless of how stellar the annual review.

Management has near 0 clue for ROI on IT projects, mostly due to upper-management promoting "people like them" and not the most qualified (no, definitely not me but others for sure). Ones who speak the truth are often ignored and either move on to better IT companies or are laid off. All suffer for that in the long run since it's always an IT problem and never willing to look "above" that.

Phrase heard often: "We need to do more with less." ....not really good management but is an interesting theory that pretty much never works.

    Advice to Management

When dealing with IT, should listen to IT professionals and there advice. There is a reason that other companies have executive management with IT backgrounds leading IT departments. This is to protect EVERYONE from bad projects since they have the power to preach the truth...just an opinion I guess but is it really that crazy...

Either way, software development needs a LOT more planning and less wasted programming. If you don't want to "do it right"...just buy the software. Will save in the long run.
