Pros

Definitely improved GIS skillset while there. Projects were interesting. Overall, people were friendly and helpful. Scheduling was flexible and it was easy to get time off. Dress code was very casual. Health insurance options were good for single people with no dependents.

Cons

Pay and vacation benefits were not competitive with other companies doing similar work, but that was presumably partially due to Wiser's position as a subcontractor. Opportunities for permanent advancement, meaning a change in job title and a raise, were rare, but that was partially due to the nature of the work and the fact that at the time, the staff was well seasoned (a skilled staff requires less oversight). Opportunities for temporary advancement, meaning no official job title change and no pay increase, occurred on a per-project basis and those opportunities were offered to those employees deemed as an appropriate fit by middle-management.

Advice to Management

Both middle and upper management would benefit greatly be fostering real and meaningful relationships with all employees, not just management. It will lessen the "us versus them" mentality, and in time might lead to increased trust and respect.

    Pros

Good entry level job for the GIS field. Place to cut your teeth and rack up experience.

Casual dress code, and people were generally friendly-
Especially if you enjoy discussing football, fishing, and huntin'

    You got paid for overtime.

    Cons

Can be extremely political. If you can't play nice with good ol' boys, you will never be promoted.
There was a particular strand of southern culture, full of hidden landmines for outsiders-

Work was feast or famine. Either you were working 50+ hours/week to meet deadlines, or bored and scared you'll be laid off.

The men were huge gossips. Watch what you say until you understand who your real friends are.

    Advice to Management

    Nurture employee relationships.
Significantly increase communication, between all departments, all projects, all people.

You lost so much money because people wasted time fixing problems their neighbor already knew the solution to.
