I worked at Wolters Kluwer full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Great products and great employees. Unbelievable loss of customer base.

Cons

Constant change for the sake of change. No real plan, just reaction.

Advice to Management

Try talking to customers instead of marketing.

I have been working at Wolters Kluwer full-time

    Pros

This once great company has a rich legacy of products, a strong brand, and a few really talented people who have a deep understanding of tax and accounting professional needs.

Much needed changes has been introduced along with a new executive team. The change is good - the team and processes they bring - less so.

    Cons

-Executive team micromanages the portfolio and costs.
-Great at making plans - but then cutting expenses needed to support those plans and yet hold revenue targets. Then have senior executives look at you as if your surprising them when you can't make the revenue targets you attempt to pull back on.
-Leaders who think they understand the customer because they understand the process of gaining customer insights. Gone for the most part are people who have actually worked in accounting and tax firms and/or studies tax and accounting from management. So even the most basic observations about markets need to be explained over and over to key executives.
-Almost all knowledgeable product managers are gone - so the people who understood why products were built and how they fit in with the portfolio workflow are not there to help the new executives understand the nuances.
-recent disasters at CCH Small Firm Services around recent tax prep product launch (due to overly aggressive product introduction goals) have irreparably damaged CCH reputation in this segment of the market. Choice of executives without experience or relationship with the target market will result in hampering any hope of recovering share in the near future.

    Advice to Management

Excessive controls and micromanaging is turning the limited talent into power point assemblers, rubber stampers, and totally unempowered. Risk taking and innovation by those who truly know the customer is down considerable. New management team constantly marginalizes any different perspectives by forcing all decisions thru an internal spanking machine where it's easy to criticize but hard to champion anything new. Stop designing systems and processes that thwart entrepreneurial spirit or the business will wither and die all too soon...
