I worked at WoodmenLife full-time for more than a year

    Pros

It's small enough your voice actually matters. They're building a sweet tech stack with GIT, microservices, Docker, and REST APIs. You will learn valuable skills here. Also once you get to know the people, they're pretty awesome. Fourth floor BT especially. They try doing Agile. Not always well, but at least they try. (Please no more 20 person standups) Lastly, they're doing admirable stuff regarding diversity. They were pretty atrocious several years ago but have gotten better.

    Cons

WoodmenLife's pretty old fashioned, e.g. sell insurance at the kitchen table business model. The battle here seems more political than technical. Financially it's gonna hurt them. Internet security policies are draconian and puzzling. For instance, they block Gmail but not Facebook? And good luck listening to online music :( Lastly, seemed they didn't trust employees to build core software. They were much more inclined to buy 3rd party off-the-shelf software and customize it rather than build it right.

    Advice to Management

Trust your employees. Listen to them. They will build awesome things if you let them. And please provide free wifi to your employees, my phone's data plan got guttted.
