I worked at Xcel Energy as a contractor

Pros

Good pay, great office environment.

Cons

Contract work, unstable, forcing off shore model. Purely management by fear, bordering abusive. No SDLC, PMO outdated, support teams are not skilled. Not a team oriented environment.

Advice to Management

Why, they wouldn't listen anyway.

    Pros

-- Xcel is a utility leader in environmental initiatives.
-- Number one in the country in the use of wind power
-- The energy industry is interesting and constantly evolving, and Xcel is a major player.

    Cons

-- "Pay for Performance" is a sham. Lipservice only.
-- "Callibration" sessions drag down individual ratings.
-- Senior leadership is not approachable

    Advice to Management

Employee engagement is built on a foundation of trust. Demonstrate that you trust your people, and we'll trust you back. Restricting internet access is one of many examples that you don't trust us.

    Pros

Good opportunity to work with lots of good engineers. Good opportunities to learn from industry seminars hosted. Also working ambiance and office setting was very good. Openness in providing feedback and performance reviews.

    Cons

Sometimes work could get very routine - which I guess could be compensated by keeping abreast with latest info in power & energy sector and also with seminars being offered from vendors etc.
