Pros

Xilinx has interesting, compelling technology which makes it a fun place for an engineer. The blend of silicon, software, IP, DSP, embedded and memory mean that there is always a new challenge around the corner.

Cons

Lack of vision, or of a clearly communicated vision.
Old, outdated processes.
Heavy-handed attempts to bring in new processes have employees feeling frustrated and devalued.

Advice to Management

Xilinx is going through growing pains. The quality of leadership in the next few years can either make or break the company. Communicate a compelling vision, add good processes, and bring back the strong sense of community - there will be no stopping you then.

    "Too much cynicism"

    Pros

Fascinating technology, promising new product line in development
Many bright minds, still some veterans around from "the vintage years"
Good work - life balance, flexible work hours
Company survived economy crisis and executive management turmoil, so if you survived the big layoffs and your manager likes you, your job is pretty save

    Cons

The 10-70-20 pay for performance system is a joke. It chokes teamwork and kills communication. Coworkers keep their bright ideas to themselves and don't tell you about important developments because they want to get all the kudos alone. Management and now even fellow coworkers do not stop talking about efficiency and do literally everything to become more visible to Moshes staff through focusing on short-term success instead of looking at the bigger picture. Xilinx has become a PowerPoint company and you only get promoted when you have the sexiest foils, not real innovation. "Stealth" layoffs on the senior management and VP level are continuing and you can see the fear in your managers eyes when you talk about an idea whose implementation would require some guts and real engineering, not PowerPoint. The many re-orgs made the managers who survived lose their confidence and they became weak and devoid of imagination. Optimism is hard to find within Xilinx these days and cynicism is omnipresent, which makes me sad. We have such a great legacy of wonderful innovation and we are at a point where we could push the technology to the next level and build the next big thing, but there seems to be nobody left who believes in that. The new executive replacement board only tries to milk Xilinx' legacy to harvest as many $$$ as possible before they move on to the next job.

    Advice to Management

Value those employees again that make real and continuous contributions over many years, instead of punishing them with your dull 6-monthly focal reviews where the biggest show-offs score. Foster innovation, not kiss-up kick-down. Make people talk to each other and work as a team again. With enforcing the fossilized 10-70-20 rule even in small groups with less than 30 people, you seed egomania, mistrust and jealousy. To spark excitement about our products amongst the employees again you first need to get excited about them yourselves!

    Pros

    - convenient commute
    - decent compensation
    - interesting technology
    - stable revenue & good margin

    Cons

    - new management is hard to swallow...
    - re-org after re-org, nurturing only those political monsters with thick faces and less than minimum decency to other human beings

    Advice to Management

life is short... be good for a change... remember how you saw the world when you were a little kid... having fun and imagine things... there are more things in life on earth than "efficiency"
