I worked at YAI National Institute full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The YAI culture is one where you can learn daily. Training is extensive and ongoing which provides opportunity for all employees to grow and remain strong in the work they deliver. You are supported and guided. I had a wonderful time during my employment with YAI. Staff and consumers hold a place in my heart still.

    Cons

Moving beyond supervisor level often takes many years due to limited position availability. This can also be viewed positively, longevity is common place particularly in upper management.

    Advice to Management

Every employee regardless of reason hired should experience (hours and culture) and train for a week at a residence. It is vastly different from the culture of non 24 hour departments. This would provide employees of the agency understanding of the extremely vital and challenging work that YAI was built on. Shared experience bridges departmental gaps, connects employees who would not have connected and enhances support given.
