Current Employee - Rock Climbing Wall Instructor in Palo Alto, CA

I have been working at YMCA part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I love working with all the people that come in (mostly kids) and teaching them proper climbing technique. The environment is laid back and allows for people that don't know anything about rock climbing to get some experience. I've enjoyed working with a lot of the staff members and my boss is easy to work with and very considerate.

    Cons

It's hard to get shifts because there are only so many times the rock wall is open. Some of the volunteers are a bit unruly because they don't feel they need to work as hard bcause they aren't staff, but the rock wall rarely gets so busy that it becomes a huge issue. It's mostly just irritating.

    Advice to Management

I would make the role more clear to volunteers that they are meant to be working and listening to the staff members, not just showing up and being sassy. I think that volunteers should also show up to any technique training that we have because they often have questionable belaying technique or lack of attention to detail.
