I worked at YMCA part-time (More than a year)

Pros

You learn to be a kid again and use team work all the while. You learn various techniques for keeping the kiddos together and on point.

Cons

Very strict rules. i.e., You can't have a tattoo showing at all.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at YMCA full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great mission and one of the best run nonprofits in Eastern Massachusetts. I was given the opportunity to grow and develop through great management training programs. We have a GLBT group run by a guy in the Metro office and it's excellent. There are affinity groups if you want to get involved and grow your career.

    Cons

Pay scales can be a little low and there is always pressure to fund raise. Budgets can be tight and that impedes quality programming, particularly in after-school programs.

    Advice to Management

Communicate more with the rank and file employees. We make it happen every day.

I worked at YMCA part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You may enjoy interfacing with and helping members of the community. Overall =The YMCA of USA has a great mission but there have been problems at this location since a new presisent was installed a few years ago.

    Cons

Upper management very opinionated and closed to feedback and suggestions. She rules the organization by actually making threats to people whom she does not like. Unfortunately not in a constructive way, but in a way that makes emplyees feel insecure about their positions.

    Advice to Management

Find a new job and stop being so threatening to employees who are only trying to help and do the right thing.
