I have been working at YMCA part-time (More than a year)

Pros

Networking, references and meeting new people

Cons

Training...required training that is not flexible for the times they demand everyone to attend.

Advice to Management

Make requirements like training and workshop accessible for all who want to work at any YMCA.

I have been working at YMCA part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Many excellent people work for the Y, and you will make many life-long friends working here. The actual work we do is really positive. Each Y feels like a family, rather than a huge faceless corporation. You won't ever feel guilty as long as you give your best effort. For the most part, competent and experienced employees have a fair bit of leeway on their actions.

    Cons

Because the Y has such high turnover, you can expect to work with several new employees each year. Some of them will be downright difficult to deal with. You will need excellent people skills to avoid making enemies and escape the politics. The middle management can be incompetent, and upper management is detached from the day to day reality. It can be difficult to be patient with people who simply don't understand when you bring up concerns.

    Advice to Management

Find out what our lives are like! I really hate it when management comes out with a new policy without seemingly considering the effect it will have on employee morale. I think anyone with a desk job at the Y needs to experience one of the jobs that require physical labor to fully understand our situation.
