I worked at YMCA part-time (More than a year)

Pros

The free gym membership was a great perk. I got to work and play with fun and cute children.

Cons

The director had too high of expectations of staff members for the money and would get rid of employee's easily instead of working with them. Another issues was that I was supposed to be working at just one school and they would pull me out and send me to different schools a lot which was not in the job description. I overall just felt like I was being treated very poorly and not supported. The turnover was very high.

Advice to Management

Allow people to make mistakes and encourage and reward them for doing their best. Be supportive.

I worked at YMCA as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

A life changing experience - this place has refreshed my perspective on life. YMCA camp Orkila is a very well run camp. They do a great job with limited resources. I always felt like I had the support I needed while on expeditions.

    Cons

Interactions between expeditions and traditional camp are not as good as they could be. Traditional camp is somewhat patronizing. It's still a great place, but expect to be frustrated with the hierarchy if you are good at what you do.

    Advice to Management

Give your counselors more freedom if they are capable.

I worked at YMCA full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

People you work with, the kids, the spirit, the traditions, location, sunsets, leadership opportunities

    Cons

Uline, Denis, camp politics, disconnect between "summer staff" and "Uline staff" and full time staff

    Advice to Management

Let the staff talk to the the one and only
