I worked at YMCA part-time (More than a year)

Pros

Flexible hours, access to facilities. great location, basketball, raquetball, sauna, gym, lap pool, hot tub, right down town by river.

Cons

Unruly patrons, decent upkeep. Some nights were more desirable to work than others...open swim was terrible. Parents used the pool as free daycare and would become upset if their children were disciplined.

I have been working at YMCA part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Community relations, fun projects, great coworkers, fun patrons, mostly work with personal schedules. People that are driven can easily find projects to take on and own as theirs. Upper management is very approachable and friendly. People genuinely care about each others well-being and personal lives. Members remember the employees and consider them friends. Benefits for part timers are available.

    Cons

Advancement and full time status is highly unlikely regardless of job performance, quality, or hours put in. Wages are not competitive and do not compensate for experience, time, or job performance. Work load and responsibilities steadily increase but job titles and positions don't change. Raises only come once a year no matter what.

    Advice to Management

Trust the experience of the employees and follow through on advancement / raise promises. People that put in a lot of time should be able to earn full time status or at least more than a $0.10 raise once a year. Too many people are encouraged to work by promises of advancement and then repeatedly told that advancement is no longer an option.
