I have been working at YMCA part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Working as a lifeguard at the Y you gain an understanding of the patrons who swim in the pool. This was a great way to explore opportunities in regard to building responsibility. For example, when speaking with patrons about the pools conditions complaints were mostly about busy the pool was and how dirty it could get. Because of this I was able to learn how to clean the pool and do so on a regular basis> I also took advantage of the opportunity of the patrons feedback to suggest possibilities to fit more patrons in the pool such as scheduling changes and swimming techniques.

    Cons

The Y was a great place to work at when all is going well, but when stress levels are high and issues arrives, the Y was not a recommendable working environment because of the lack of communication. Sometimes the management will put on facade torwards the lower level employees as opposed to being honest with them.

    Pros

The Y is a family friendly work place. They are willing to take risks with their hires but a lot of times they have to take risks because the pay very little for how many hours they require you to work.

    Cons

Over worked for what you are paid. You must apply and go through the interview process for most promotions. It is a great place if you work hourly. Working for them as an exempt employee is not good!
