I have been working at YMCA part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great coworkers, flexible hours, free gym membership, some random benefits like vouchers for free flu shots.

    Cons

Little to no appreciation from management, HR, or executives, great deal of pressure to volunteer, donate money, and otherwise go far beyond the terms of your job description, lack of common sense fiscal management in some areas, lack of support from management in enforcement of rules and handling problematic patrons with a "customer is always right" attitude, lax in regards to safety and maintenance if it keeps patrons happy or saves the facility money, morale is frequently low. Often feel underpaid for the level of work (often beyond our job description) that is expected.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention and appreciation to lower-level hourly employees. Realize that your "mission" to serve the community does not give you license to treat front-line staff poorly.

  2. "Not a positive environment to work in, despite the "mission""

I worked at YMCA full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The overall "mission" is a good one.. the patrons aren't snooty unlike most NYC gym environments

    Cons

Most senior employees are unmotivated and it was a very depressing atmosphere. Executive director was clueless as to what was really going on at the branch. Perhaps the job would have been better with a more positive and motivated staff. Some employees have been working there for years with no upward movement even when positions are open. This isn't the kind of place that requires a college education to work there, loyal and capable employees should be promoted!! I'm happy that my time there was brief..

    Advice to Management

Update your computer systems to programs that are used this century!
