Pros

Yahoo! is a diverse business and if you make the effort you can learn a lot.

It has some really smart people. Generally, people are very respectful of one another.

Cons

Matrix organisation which gets worse in Europe.
Very political and the wrong people are promoted.
Management does not make hard decisions about people. They keep people who are mediocre for too long. That is why they are in such a mess now.

Advice to Management

Work much quicker. Stop being wishy-washy. Create a strategy and then let the smart people below to develop and implement a tactical plan

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Good people, fair compensation. Great chance for professional project development. As a software engineer, it doesn't matter what your specialty is - C++, Java, Perl, PHP - you may have a chance to use them all.

    Cons

Occasional lack of clear direction from management. Potential lack of long term career opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Be more honest and upfront. If you can't pay us more, that's understandable as long as other forms of compensation are on the table. Glass doors are different from glass ceilings.

    Pros

The best reasons to work for Yahoo I feel are:
It is a fun filled environment, and most of the times, the work one does affects millions of users.
The scale that Yahoo operates is amazing.
A very good number of perks available. Subsidized Lunch.
You get to learn something every other day. You get to meet people whom you mostly read of and never thought you could actually see.
    Good appreciation for work done.
Teams cooperating with each other to get things done
Overall, I feel, it is a very good company for a fresher, to gain more knowledge and expertise.

    Cons

Proprietary technologies used heavily, leaving less scope for professional growth.
Plagiarism and red tapism written all the way in upper management.
The hiring process of late has been very bad, resulting in lots of under-talented people in the company, and then trying to clean them up with layoffs is a bad idea.
Most of the time, you would see teams duplicating efforts, due to lack of good platforms to build things fast, secure and reliable.
You also would find constant reorgs happening.
Management some times doesn't feel the need to convey things to employees when needed.
Hack days happen inviting ideas from employees, but wouldn't be evaluated in a proper fashion.

    Advice to Management

    Avoid Red tapism, and plagiarism.
Don't always think in terms of revenue, but the user experience instead.
