Pros

No where to spend your money. Student loans can be paid off.

Cons

The cost of living is very high. You can only leave via airplane and it costs approximately $350 round trip to fly into Anchorage for specialized medical, shopping or even to go to the movies. There is nothing to do on your days off. No movies, very few restaurants and they all have the same food, nothing that you would have in a regular city.

Advice to Management

Value your regular staff instead of the travelers. If you pay a traveler $40 an hour then $40 an hour to their company, plus round trip transportation, plus housing, and you only pay your regular employe $40 an hour the 6% you put into their account at the end of the year does not equate not with the harsh living environment and the cost of living in an isolated village.

I worked at Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corp. full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

They offer an excellent time off, benefits and relocation package; they understand the hospital belongs to the people (not for some big corporation or entity); they save a lot of lives because of their remote location and catering to other remote locations.

    Cons

Sometimes management forgets the golden rule, if you treat people with respect, they will respect you back (Respect is earned not a right!).

    Advice to Management

Ensure all levels of management have the proper training on how to develop and motivate staff.
