Pros

Zygo hires excellent technical people and has challenging products / projects to work on. There is good esprit de corp among the technical staff to get problems solved and help out co-workers. If you are interested in engineering challenges, this is a very good place to work.

Cons

Zygo is a medium to small sized company but sometimes it is managed as if it were a very large company.

Advice to Management

Take a longer term view on how to run the company.

    Pros

Engineering staff is skilled, dedicated, diligent, resourceful and down to earth. You get to work on cutting edge technologies.

    Cons

Sales and management have no plans nor do they have the experience on how to commercialize products.

Instead they react and hastily improvise a plan in order to rush the delivery of incomplete products to customers.

This requires that the engineering staff works with the additional under pressure of completing the promises that sales and management had made to the customers.

Additionally, for company dealing in precision technologies I am amazed by the shear inability of gathering detailed requirements from customers. A single line buried in a spreadsheet is not a detailed requirement.

    Advice to Management

Management should learn more about the Project Management Triangle, since they have no clue about controlling scope, cost, nor schedule. In the end it affects quality of the products that are delivered.

In order to make hi-tech company profitable, it requires a lot of talented and skilled employees. Management should focus on keeping them.
