No opinion of CEO

I worked at athenahealth full-time (More than a year)

Pros

* Good pay and benefits
* Perks: billiard table, beer fridge, doughnut Friday
* Fun culture, easy-going people that generally work hard
* Smart developers, if a bit distracted sometimes

Cons

* Full stack work is mostly scripting
* Technical debt rarely addressed
* Codebase needs a lot of work: not DRY, few standard objects or interfaces, much spaghetti

Advice to Management

Focus on the code. Start using Design Patterns and enforce standards. New features/promises to big contract clients have ravaged the codebase.

    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO

    I have been working at athenahealth full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Vibrancy, very intelligent co-workers, strong focus on workplace quality (of space, meals, etc.).

    Cons

    The company flails at the whims of the CEO. Little external company experience at senior management level. Fear of losing high stock comp at senior levels seriously limits dissent and pushback despite culture that claims otherwise. Those who challenge the status quo are pushed out counter to cultural values. G&A is a tough place to work with little support or effective leadership.

    Advice to Management

    Bring in more free thinking but experienced leaders....not just old friends and political connections. More focus on effective project management by people with relevant systems knowledge.
