I have been working at dunnhumby full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Ambitious company, great culture, good community, smart people, good tech stack, everyone is helpful, good work/life balance, flexible hours, early finish Fridays - all in all, a decent place to work

    Cons

For people in tech, there is no official training offered, it's very much you learn on the job, which is good (and often better) in many ways, but to compliment that by offering proper training would be highly useful and effective. Allowing employees a training budget and some say over how to spend it would be beneficial. The company is growing and changing a lot, which means sometimes it can feel unstable and... uncertain, but I suppose that is inevitable for a company trying to grow.

I worked at dunnhumby full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Great office environment, great people,

    Cons

Hired to help usher in new ideas around Site Reliability but was quickly shut down. First off, they don't have a clue how to go about a digital transformation in order to achieve site reliability. They still do a lot of server configurations manually. Still logging into servers as root, little to no automation and reluctant to do the things necessary to move more towards a devops mentality. They have a 90 day... probationary period with unrealistic goals to achieve in that time frame. They were constantly shifting priorities and setting unrealistic expectations on achieving goals. They were more worried about documenting things than actually getting something working correctly. When I left, I had no exit interview and the manager did not speak to me at all during the final two weeks.

    Advice to Management

Bring in new manager who has a focus on a true digital transformation. Quit allowing managers to stifle innovation simply because you are "dunnhumbified". Listen to engineers who have worked in the DevOps space and understand what it takes to undergo a true digital transformation. Enlist Agile methodology for your operations team. Hire a true project manager. Treat the engineers like engineers. Provide them with... the tools necessary to do job. Provide an option for Macs.
