Pros

Ability to negotiate sales prices with customers allowing you to close more sales if you have strong people and negotiating skills. Growing company, so good opportunity to advance into management if you have desire and what it takes to manage people.

Cons

Sales commissions are lower than what you can earn at Sears for same sales volumes by about 1%. At HHgreg we call it commission control, corporate plays with cost to the store on what appears to be almost a daily basis so profit changes continuously therefore effecting your commissions payed on profit.

Advice to Management

To corporate, your store managers are in fear for their jobs every time a regional manager walks in the store forcing the store manager to over micro manage sales staff and making everyones life miserable. When you have miserable sales people who are the face of your business, that is a direct reflection of your company to customer who interact with your sales force. Get your sales force excited (genuinly) and they will excite your customers into committing to more sales.

I worked at hhgregg full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Nice Discount if you can afford anything with high profit margin.
    -Easy job.
    -Nice coworkers(cashier and warehouse)

    Cons

-Minimum wage unless you can lie about service plans.
-Sales coworkers are basically back stabbing adult children.
    -Incompetent management
-NO work/life balance. Every Saturday is mandatory, 70 hour work weeks during Christmas, they think having 1 Sunday off is a reward.
-Slow hours means you make no money.
-If a sale is online, nobody makes money off of it except the company, and you are still expected to help the customer.

    Advice to Management

Don't integrate online sales unless you compensate the employees.

I worked at hhgregg full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

high growth rate, relocation available as they expand west and south. Ok pay.

    Cons

losing the family run culture which cared about employees, becoming an HR run meat grinder.

Micro-management from upper levels has grown exponentially the last few years. For example, schedules made at a corporate level with no flexibility or consideration for the needs of the managers, employees, or operational demands of the local building. Building managers in distribution are given a schedule as they are incapable (at $$60-80k year) to make a schedule suddenly for 12 people.

    Advice to Management

Let your managers do some managing. Let them make schedules and take care of minor disciplinary infractions with discretion, not through an inflexible corporate HR dept. that is over-reactive.
