I worked at Emptoris full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fantastic growth opportunities and lots of energy. This company values people who want to step up a level.

    Cons

Very distributed team with many stakeholders makes it difficult to know if you are on the right path.

    Advice to Management

    Keep the entrepreneurial spirit.

    Pros

I was part of Emptoris before it was acquired by IBM. Back then, it had a smallcompany culture, great rapport between cross functional teams ~ QA, dev, product management, professional services. Sourcing and Spend products were stable, had a good customer base which translated to enough good work to keep you going.

    Cons

They have a huge team in India, and mostly interactions are required on a regular basis. That means you will have to come into work really early to catch up with the offshore folks.
Not many fun activities for employees, except 2 or 3 ~ summer outing, thanksgiving party. Many new members joined the company from acquisitions in US burlington office leading to work culture differences.

    Advice to Management

Keep employees updated about new happenings like acquistions. Introduce fun activities ~ all work and no play isnt good.

    Pros

the people are fantastic to work with. Co-workers are smart and creative. I have had a lot of opportunity to grow by learning new things and holding various positions. Senior management listens to issues that are brought to their attention.

    Cons

The company is in a growth phase. It is not sure if it is a small company or a large company. This means that some of the infrastructure is not in place like a large IT organization, etc. On the flip side, there are multiple layers of management, which is needed to grow, so at times the company acts larger than it is.

    Advice to Management

The employee base is made up of a distinct groups. Those that have been there for a long time, the ones that came from in acquisition, and the ones that came on board because of management. Try to understand how each group feels and take advantage of all of their experiences.

    Pros

Each group at Emptoris is large enough to take on compelling projects with major clients but small enough to retain a cooperative team feeling.

    Cons

Because each team is tight-knit, there is often tension when intra team cooperation is required. This may require additional patience but is no more than is probably experienced at other companies of the same size.

    Advice to Management

Emptoris has great employees. More of an investment should be made in advancing their capabilities through formal education and training.
