I worked at Encana full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

9-80 work weeks, great vacation, good bonuses. They trust employees to take calculated risks to push the envelope. Didn't micro-manage.

    Cons

Zero cons until they tried to make "one team" with Canada. Massive layoff in 2013 put inexperienced bordering on incompetent people in VP position. Cronyism is rampant.

    Advice to Management

Hire experienced professionals in key support roles and stop trying to hide engineers or friends in them. Stop allowing individuals to run areas like its their own fiefdom.

1st and 3rd Fridays offs and other great benefits. Challenging work environment, will not be bored.

    Cons

Culture shift due to reorg, higher attrition rate that prior years

    Advice to Management

Continue to maintain transparency to employees and continue to develop positive culture shift. Maintain excellence in industry in employee retention in all fields not just operations.

I worked at Encana full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It's not a good sign when your favorite thing about a job is the time off! I enjoyed my colleagues and co-workers. Vacation time was based on age instead of years with the company. I loved the time off.

    Cons

Terribly unsupported by the team lead and manager. I came on with the understanding that I would be working under an experienced analyst and would be trained. The analyst quit shortly after I arrived and was not replaced. I was left without support in my role.

    Advice to Management

Communication through the ranks of management was not synchronized. I felt a disconnect between what they said they held as values, and what they did.

    Pros

Great people, opportunities to move to different positions, diverse learning opportunities, first and third Fridays off, good benefits and 401k matching, stellar vacation time.

    Cons

The direction of the company is always behind that of the industry, lack the wherewithal to pull the trigger on money saving and money making transactions.

    Advice to Management

Move the company to the forefront of the industry.

    Pros

Incredible benefits and pay. Very complex work if you like complex

    Cons

Not an innovative or collaborative culture, people don't share information and will do whatever it takes for their own selves versus the team. Very hierarchical. Also, they give you 6 weeks vacation, but then tell you you can't use it.

    Advice to Management

Figure out a way to get teams to work together

I worked at Encana (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent culture; collaboration is the norm and everyone is expected to respect and value other disciplines

    Cons

Huge swings in focus over the last 10 years; 2009 it was all about natural gas and then by 2012 it was liquids only.

    Advice to Management

Get a new board and top managment

    I worked at Encana full-time

    Pros

1st and 3rd Fridays off. Excellent vacation. 401k match, Good bonuses. Some very great people to work with. Tea and coffee. Nice offices, Good pay.

    Cons

Senior management is unaware of the day to day work employees are doing. They have no idea who is contributing or not. Senior Management does not communicate with direct reports. Executives, are disconnected from the actual work that is being done at the company. Management gets caught up in things that won't move the needle long term and sourcing is disconnected from the business.

    Advice to Management

Try to survive until the industry gets better. Remember that a vast amount of employees worked at Encana when Encana recruited the best and wanted to make it the most desirable place to work. They have retained some of the best in business talent. Hopefully, when the industry recovers they will get back to that.
