    Pros

They will pay to get you qualified to work the position. Great entry level position. If you're just starting to get into the 9-5 routine this is a good spot to start.

    Cons

Call center work environment. Open cubes with team leads aka babysitters able to watch your every more. Due to the lay out it feels like someone is looking over your shoulder constantly. Especially if your desk is in the middle of the large warehouse like room. Definitely a favoritism work environment. If you don't click and kiss butt with every single person don't hold your breath to climb the latter. Also "Legal Specialist" means that you are approving paperwork that gets sent on within court documents to SERVE people in order to SUE them for debt collection. I.E. your name is all up in the paperwork so these people can seek you out. The company really doesn't explain that to you or their affiant team, ever. Either some people completely don't understand that or they simply do not care. Mass production of these type of documents in a very hush hush-in terms of business product and reality assessment-type business is slightly concerning.

    Advice to Management

Get and HR rep in the building ASAP. Training is horribly disorganized due to the lack of at least one person able to devote their time to having a proper training schedule and to act as a resource for training and staff questions that would be better handled by someone not so much concerned with your "production value".

I have been working at Encore Capital Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-Most people are friendly and easy to work with.

    -Good exposure to the business.

    - Mid and lower management seem to care about you and your career.

    Cons

-Bad work/life balance. It's expected of you to work late nights in the office and to work on weekends. And of course, there's no overtime pay.

-Compensation is unsatisfactory. Contrary to what senior management claims, Encore's compensation is well below market average in San Diego.

-Benefits get cut every year. Health insurance is very basic and is getting worse almost every year. Try to stay healthy, otherwise you'll be broke if you get sick. 401K is bad as well.

    - Senior management and executives are disconnected from actual business to make sound decisions. If they take a closer look at the business, some of the recent cost reductions strategies have a high chance of harming the company.

-Talent is not appreciated. Executives are too focused on cost savings to appreciate the top performers who are driving the business forward. This caused a lot of top performers leaving the company.

-It's a heavily regulated industry which means any kind of regulation change could potentially have a huge impact on business. CEO might have claimed it otherwise during town hall meetings, recent regulations changes have been very disruptive to business and our work.

-High turnover across the company due to top performers not being appreciated. Company tries to hire to less talented and less experienced people to replace top performers which is a disastrous idea to begin with. Because of the low pay and bad benefits, we're having a hard time hiring new people. Departments across the company are short on people.

-Depressing morale across the company. Encore used to be happy place when I first joined. Now with all the massive layoffs, hiring freeze and benefits cut, everyone is depressed. If the CEO could grace us with his presence in the office once in a while, he might actually see how depressing this company is and how unhappy his employees are.

-Office politics are particularly heavy at senior management level. Senior management are too afraid to stand up to their bosses to protect their direct reports.

    Advice to Management

    - Appreciate your top performers.

-Get more connected with business and listen to people to understand what's going on in the company. The 'rainbows and butterflies' in town hall meetings are not reality.

    - Try to stand up to your bosses to protect your direct reports.

    Pros

The people on my team are team players and great to work with.

    Cons

The new upper management (within the last 3 years) are terrible. They only care about cutting costs. This creates a very negative, unmotivted environment. This used to be a great company but the morale has gone down the toilet.

    Advice to Management

Recognize people aren't just chess pieces. You are losing great people and the cost of turn over is very high on all levels.

I have been working at Encore Capital Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexibility of schedules and nice people in the company.

    Cons

Too many initiatives make it impossible to get anything done. Nothing in HR is getting any better since the entire team has turned over.

    Advice to Management

Try to retain people rather than giving the people that stay more work. Reputation of HR is suffering from the high turnover. Unfair leveling in work and pay.

    Pros

I cannot think of any, at least not any more. The health plans used to be decent but were changed for the worse. 401K plan match was also good but I heard from current employees that it was also changed for the worse.

    Cons

Too many but here are some big ones
    1. Zero room for creativity
    2. Qualifications & knowledge work against you since people in charge most often lack them
          and feel threatened
    3. Salaries are below market (sometimes significantly) for a lot of people and raises are low or
         non-existent
    4. Benefits are some of the worst in corporate America and getting worse
    5. Only "YES" employees are valued, and if lucky promoted.
    6. Cutthroat culture in some departments.

    Advice to Management

Hire smart people and let them loose not the opposite! There are capable people from non East Coast schools and your favorite Retail/Credit Card Bank but you're too blind to see it. The culture and practice of meritocracy is totally lacking and the company will go nowhere without it in the medium to long term.

I worked at Encore Capital Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    I can't think of any.

    Cons

The CEO is acerbic and cares only about money, not employees or consumers the company is supposedly trying to "help." His senior management team are afraid of him and won't make a move or raise issues that might counter him. The stress and unpleasantness rolls downhill to everyone. No chance for advancement, back-stabbing culture, dated technology, 2% raises per year. Need I say more?

Add to that, the idea that you're earning your salary off the backs of poor people who owe old debts that they cannot pay. I had to hold my nose every day when I walked in the door.

    Advice to Management

Advice to the Board of Directors: Fire the CEO. The board would be surprised if they knew how unhappy and unmotivated employees are at this company -- at least I hope they would be.

I worked at Encore Capital Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

free food leftover from meetings, team building activities.

    Cons

Lousy benefits ( especially since 401k benefits was reduced), rewarding drama and gossip (focusing on the work won't get you recognized or promoted) and less than 2% pay raise each year. Management promote the yes people. The new CRO made a few bad decisions in department re-organization. Audit is down to just managers when all the staff quit.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to results of the employee survey and focus in the work. hint: the ones who love drama frequently say they hate drama,
