    Pros

Great Pay. Good exposure to various parts of the business. Utilities industry overall is great since it is a fixture in our lives. Good culture if you work direct for them.

    Cons

Long hours, Political Land mines. Lack of Consideration for internal candidates . Need more leadership transparency and promote a culture of team work.

    Advice to Management

I worked at Energy Future Holdings

    Pros

Company has large retail electric utility customer base. TXU Energy business unit is an energetic and creative place to work.

    Cons

The power generation business unit is struggling in the Texas competitive market and this struggle makes creates instability at the employee level making it not a good place to work.

    Advice to Management

Executive leadership needs to be much more transparent in communication with employees regarding the short and long range plan for the company.

I worked at Energy Future Holdings full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Consulting like pace. Pay is at par. 20% bonus is great too,

    Cons

Company has an overall plant worker /craft mentality. i.e. to treat everyone as a commodity and not to mention trusting in their outsourced vendors more than internal employees. It is truly an awful place to work in my books. as of 2016, all projects have been shut down. its going to be a while any investments are made until mr.Ceo sells off the company in 5 years from now.

    Advice to Management

You have extremely smart employees. Give them delivery responsibilities and grow them as future leaders.

I worked at Energy Future Holdings full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

A lot of hard working long term employees that knew the business of utilities

    Cons

Too many laid off employees to make a successful company. Massive revenue losses due to ignorance!

    Advice to Management

Before you hire stupid CEOs/CIOs evaluate the corporate situation and where you want to go. Maybe your tenured employees couldn't help you get there!

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Energy Future Holdings full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

The team I work with are talented and dedicated.

    Cons

The IT leadership team cares more about promoting the idea of a highly functioning shared services IT group more than they actually care about helping the enterprise.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to spend less time posturing and convincing the organization that the IT group is highly functioning and more time completing projects that truly helps the organization.

I worked at Energy Future Holdings for more than a year

    Pros

The work environment is nice, with knowledgeable employees and good compensation.

    Cons

Too much in-fighting, deception, micro-managing, disorganization, and flat out lack of communication, especially from leadership to their direct reports. Of course, given the fact that EFH is in bankruptcy, it might be a sign of the times. Regardless, EFH is far from a meritocracy, and treatment of it's contractors as team members is sub-par. If you don't mind a good ol' boy system, I'd recommend the company for the learning...

    Pros

Nice office, great people, decent benefits, a lot of change in IT.

    Cons

Promotions based more on who you know and current favorites - less on actual performance.

    Advice to Management

Stop buying into the pretty pictures put in front of you by those wanting to get ahead. Be honest with yourselves about what's really going on and who's really making valuable contributions.

Former Employee - Manager in Dallas, TX

I worked at Energy Future Holdings full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Pay and benefits are good--above average in some areas. Bonuses are very generous and many there are just nice and enjoyable people with whom to work. If you work in the right areas, you will get experience in power plant operation, energy trading, hedging, nuclear regulatory issues, mining operations and environmental regulations.

    Cons

The KKR/TPG leveraged buyout hurt the company. There was an expectation natural gas prices would remain high 8 years ago, and the largely coal fired fleet would make good profits because power is priced on gas generation costs. When TXU was purchased by KKR, coal was a much cheaper fuel (the company reaped the benefits of the fuel cost difference). Without too much detail, the company appears to be heading toward bankruptcy....

    Advice to Management

There are three areas for improvement: 1) Employee development is lacking--senior management does not have a grasp of employee skills or how to use them. There are informal networks utilizing people's skills, but often these employees are never recognized for their contribution. 2) Internal Politics drives decisions and information flow. For a company with high debt where every dollar spent is borrowed, this is a roadblock...
