Working for Energy Northwest: Columbia Nuclear Generating Station

Sep 10, 2020 - Lead Maintenance Planner in Richland, WA

    Pros

High Pay, good benefits package, matching 401K, state pension, minimal supervisor micro-management, annual performance pay review, department/company performance bonuses, advancement opportunities.

    Cons

Highly rule and procedure based. requires strong knowledge of NRC federal regulations with strict adherence and work required in a radiation environment. Many milestones, deadlines and emergent maintenance and projects. Promptness of necessary resources and task implementations slower than would typically be expected. Frequent plan evaluations, rule/procedure conformance adherence verifications, work plan rewrites and plan changes prior to implementation.

    Pros

Good benefits, pension plan. Plenty of training opportunities--usually.

    Cons

Weak support for project managers. A lot of responsibility, not much authority.

    Pros

Many opportunities around the plant to try new things. The work varies from day to day with each task bringing new challenges. Good Benefits

    Cons

Long hours are often due to low staff and large work load. Continuously on call. Documentation is ridiculously difficult to find for many things. Almost impossible to get job related training. Limited to learning on your own for most things. Work life balance is terrible since schedule and cost drive everything. It can be difficult to maintain an effective technical conscience. Company likes to farm out work as much as possible and often times the contractors are sub par. The contractors don't have an incentive for providing quality work.

Not a bad place to work, need to know people to move up

    Pros

Decent pay, overall good work experience, great people. Good benefits including a state pension as well as 401K. Medical and Dental are also pretty good.

    Cons

Located about 30 minutes away from anywhere. Traffic coming home can be bad with Hanford. No real opportunity to advance unless you know upper management. People are given jobs because they know upper management, which leads to a good amount of people not knowing what they're doing.

    Things are improving

May 15, 2013 - Individual Contributor in Richland, WA

    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

The culture for excellence appears to be catching on; very good pay, good benefits. Our ranking within the industry is improving.

    Cons

Stressful and demanding work environment; no work-life balance. Middle management still lacks ability to manage workload dispursement, performance and engagement. Some departments are better than others.
